I called the midwife practice of my choice 2 days after I found out my beta. I'm 3rd on the wait list as they are full for February.
I don't see how this could even be possible!
But apparently some (sounds like most) women call when they are TRYING. As in, I should've called on the egg retrieval date--just in case.
New York City is really getting to me in so many ways and this is just one more example.
And it's pouring rain--again.
Tomorrow morning we leave for an upstate trip to the Adirondacks and Lake George. Please, please let there be sun!!
Thanks for all of the questions--you came up with some really good ones and I'm going to tackle them in later posts.

Wow - well you better start calling daycare centers and probably even preschools while the little one(s) is/are still in utero...
Whoa---this is something I do not miss about living in the midwest! Good luck on finding someone. Is there an OB as a back up plan?
Oh and start looking into daycare/preschool NOW. I know it's crazy. Brooklyn is a tiny bit better, but not much.
But conversely, there are so many great things to do with kids here! (Don't leave, please!) Have much fun at Lake George!
DOH! That is out-of-control crazy! Good luck with finding a good provider, and have a blast on your trip.
That's CRAZY!! Have you already sent off college application letters ;)
This was my EXACT experience (and I think I wrote about it here: http://longdistanceinfertility.blogspot.com/2008/05/trying-not-to-panic.html). In the end I found a midwife and I'm happy to talk about specific ones (I don't recommend either of the ones in the practice I used) and strategies for finding one if you send me an e-mail at longdi.st.an.ce.infertility@gmail.com.
thats crazy! and im surprised the practice would even take on the woman as a client if she was just "trying" and didnt have a confirmed pregnancy yet. #3 is probably a pretty good bet you'll get in, at least.
have a fun vacation - hope the sun shines for you!
I have LOTS of opinions about NYC midwives, so if you need suggestions for others (beyond the list that you have) please let me know- figboiler@gmail.com. There are so many fabulous midwives in NYC that I feel confident that you will find one who is a perfect fit for you.
It makes me angry, thinking that you would have to compete for space in a midwives' practice, then daycare, then preschool, then school... urgh. It's enough to make you want to raise your children on a sailboat circumnavigating the world, isn't it? I hope that the right spot opens up for you, and I'm sorry for the stress.
Wow, that far in advance?? This practice must be top knotch! I'm hoping that there is some sun upstate because there sure is none here on Long Island. If you find some, post a picture of it.. I forgot what it looks like!
If it makes you feel any better, I was on two waiting lists and got off of both of them the same day. And I didn't call until week 8. So I'm sure you won't be midwifeless.
That is just crazy! No wonder the nurses in the NICU said we should start looking for pre-schools now! By the way, finally got my blog up and running...so now I can comment without being ANON! =)
We have been on daycare list since I was 7 weeks and I live in Canada and won't even need daycare until the child is a year! Even going on the lists at 7 weeks likely isn't early enough to get us a spot.
It is tough to raise kids in this culture.
Insane. If I had called a midwife when I first started trying (September) they probably would have given up on me by now.
Same thing here (alberta) for getting a midwife. You have to call as soon as the pee dries on the stick and even then you will most likely end up on a wait list.
A friend put her son on a waitlist for daycare when he was 2m old, she JUST got a call this month saying they had a spot for him, he turned 2 in March.
