Foie Gras

I've been trying to escape a cold for the last couple of days and yesterday the cold won.
Sleep is elusive and I need it badly in order to be healthy. I have no idea how I got sick; I haven't been out of the house in a week.

In a moment of desperation last night we decided we would start "topping off" after BFing. I had enough breast milk pumped to do this plus give them their bottle of BM in the middle of the night.
It worked! They slept four hours with nursing and the top off, then I slept through the next feeding while Chicken gave them their BM bottle.
I got an entire 6 hours of UNINTERRUPTED sleep. This is the most sleep I've had since they've been born.

I nursed for the next 2 feedings, at 5:20am and 6:45am, pumping for 30 minutes after each session, so you do the math...not really much down time. Grunter was fussy and I was getting delerious.
When they were ready to eat again an hour later, we broke down and gave them a bottle of formula so I could sleep.

It was the first formula they've had in almost 18 days--since I started exclusively breast feeding them with the help of my lactation consultant.

I felt like a horrible mother, but god I needed the sleep.
When Whoop Whoop had the worst reflux--he's been having some issues--and projectile vomited all over himself, well then I really felt like the worst mother ever, because this has not happened since we switched to breast milk only.

Urgh. So while we tried to fatten them up like little foie gras in an attempt to get some much needed sleep, it worked...but with consequences.

I know it's not the end of the world...but I just want to be able to feed them 100 percent.
And get some sleep. And stop coughing. Oh, and my sore throat needs to go away so I can eat without pain.
Feh.

So, I've been following your blog but have never posted! I totally feel your pain with the lack of sleep and I've only got 1!! My heart goes out to you and it is amazing how you can "semi" function on little to no sleep. When my son was a newborn I was feeding him every 2 hours and a feeding would take about an hour so I would get maybe a hour of sleep in between feedings and it was rough. It does get better...it has too! Thinking of you and wishing you more sleep!!

sorry ya'll are in such a rough spot right now. i know it doesn't feel like life will ever return to normal and you will sleep again. the six hour stretch sounds nice - here's hoping you can repeat that tonight. ((()))

I felt the same way when my milk was making him sick after eating something that disagreed with him, and I cried too when he fed him formula. It was only one feeding and we made it through... You will too! Hang in there. I am getting a cold today too- what's up with that!

You are amazing.. don't feel guilty about the formula.. you have TWINS! You need the rest. a little formula isn't going to harm them.. not to worry..

Puff you are amazing and don't let a little formula get you down. The important thing is that babies are fed and puff and chicken get some sleep so they can take care of babies.

It's the nature of parenting. You do the best job you possibly can, with the set of circumstances you're given. Some days you'll be happier with the outcome than others.
You're both super-fantastic moms, and you're a BFing rock star, so cut yourself some slack and get well!
I love ya!

So sorry to hear you are sick... I got sick once when the boys were almost 3 months old and I remember begging my wife to stay home the next day because I didn't think I would make it on my own with the boys. Twins are exhausting, but twins while you aren't 100%, almost impossible! Don't beat yourself up about the formula, the point is they got fed and you got some much needed rest! Somethings gotta give sometimes...feel better!

6 hours of sleep is glorious!!! This is so hard. I do not do well on lack fo sleep.

Don't beat yourself up on the formula. You're doing an amazing job - more more than other mothers!

Oh Puffer, a little projectile vomit does not a terrible mother make. Mama needs some sleep sometimes and compromises have to be made. I mean, if you have nothing, you have nothing to give so take the little chances you get to do what you need to for yourself.

The boys are darling as always and they are filling out too! Hope you get over that cold ASAP.
