Keeping Mastitis Away...Help Needed

For two days now I have had large lumps in my left breast. Having had mastitis before I know to get serious about preventing it.
Out came the hot rice sock, the hot showers "combing" the breast, the massages followed and I've upped the pumping and breastfeeding.
I've even breastfed in the middle of the night when I've been woken up by the pain in my breast.
So far, I've kept mastitis at bay, BUT, I can't get these lumps out.
It's very uncomfortable even holding the baby on that side as he pushes up against my breast.

I'm pretty sure this was brought on by a milk blister on my nipple which caused a backup/clog in the duct.
The nipple was pierced with a needle a couple of days ago and it is healing now, painful, but healing.
I feel like I'm doing everything I know to do, but it's not going away. It hasn't gotten worse, but it hasn't gotten better either.

Advice?

Ouch. It sounds like you're doing everything right. I had the same lumps caused by a milk blister, and I remember that it did take a few days to clear up. But if it goes beyond that...maybe call the dr? Heal soon!

I know this is weird, but I've heard nursing upside down helps.

If you are having reoccurring issues with milk blisters it is still probably thrush, so you are likely going to need to address that underlying problem. Avoid going on antibiotics if you can. Try out different positioning while breastfeeding and see if that improves drainage.

:( Poor Puff! I hope this doesn't turn into mastitis again!

I wonder if it is related to taking the Fenugreek? If you have too much milk and LO's aren't taking all the milk out, then the milk might be stagnating and causing the inflammation? Just a thought.

My partner took lecithin to help deal with this problem. I can't remember the details, but I think that the kellymom site has lots of info on it.

I was having the same problem. I started taking 1200 mg of lecithin (a vitamin supplement) every morning. Problem solved, not a lump since.

Good luck!

Ouch! You are doing everything I could think of short of calling the doctor. Good luck.
